It looks big because it is BIG!!!! this is the biggest insect I have ever seen (outside of a zoo) I only know what it is because I looked it up (it frightened me)
Completely harmless to humans, it doesn't even eat in its adult phase, aparently considered very tasty by birds, dogs, cats, squirrels and even some people.
